How We Help
Breathing should be effortless, light, quiet, and unnoticeable. Correct breathing has a profound effect on all areas of life. Below are the ways we can help you:
Breathing re-education (BRE) focuses on the person's breathing pattern, such as dysfunctional breathing, which includes chronic hyperventilation, mouth breathing, chest breathing, and poor breathing habits during sleep to name a few. By reinstating the proper mode, rate, and depth of breathing we stimulate the body to spend more time in rest, digest, and a restorative (parasympathetic) state. This allows for better artery dilation and gas exchange in the lungs, better oxygen delivery to cells and tissues of the body, better chemical signaling in the brain directing us to breathe, and better use of the correct breathing muscles which diverts stress away from the often overworked muscles of the head, neck and shoulders.
Myofunctional therapy is an exercise-based therapy. Think of it like physical therapy, only for the muscles of the mouth, tongue, and face. The exercises are designed specifically to train proper breathing, speaking, chewing, and swallowing. Recent research has shown that myofunctional therapy may reduce the symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing (such as snoring) and ameliorate mild to moderate OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). When functioning and used properly, the muscles of the tongue, throat, and face, can reduce obstruction to the airway. With myofunctional therapy, a patient can regain the joy of eating, speaking, breathing, and even sleeping more soundly.
